She lived inside a “large obtrusive structure” inside my apartment that became known simply as “the bubble.” The goal was to examine art’s impact in the world. During this week, we talked, we hugged, we cried, we fought. The experience became something more than just an art project. We have spoken only once since then. I hope to continue the conversation we began with this blog.

art is fear

I went to reblog your post about your friend smashing the guitar and the reblog button was greyed out which took me like 5 minutes to realize it meant that you deleted the post. :( I've enjoyed following your blog btw.

I tried reblogging it again - didn’t publish the whole thing the first time around. If nothing else, we are having a lot of fun. We have been meeting for an hour before he show at Sankofa to warm up our banter muscles and drink a glass of wine to soothe the nerves. We’re sticking to the three segment format, with a relevant song in between each segment. This week, Karen gave me some dating advice, then we talked about bad travel stories, and finally Karen chose a mystery topic in which she asked, “When was the best time of your life?” I was reluctant to talk about any dating escapades for fear it’ll ruin any chance I have of ever dating again! We’ll see how this portion goes…

so you want to be a writer

if it doesn’t come bursting out of you
in spite of everything,
don’t do it.
unless it comes unasked out of your
heart and your mind and your mouth
and your gut,
don’t do it.
if you have to sit for hours
staring at your computer screen
or hunched over your
typewriter
searching for words,
don’t do it.
if you’re doing it for money or
fame,
don’t do it.
if you’re doing it because you want
women in your bed,
don’t do it.
if you have to sit there and
rewrite it again and again,
don’t do it.
if it’s hard work just thinking about doing it,
don’t do it.
if you’re trying to write like somebody
else,
forget about it.

if you have to wait for it to roar out of
you,
then wait patiently.
if it never does roar out of you,
do something else.

if you first have to read it to your wife
or your girlfriend or your boyfriend
or your parents or to anybody at all,
you’re not ready.

don’t be like so many writers,
don’t be like so many thousands of
people who call themselves writers,
don’t be dull and boring and
pretentious, don’t be consumed with self-
love.
the libraries of the world have
yawned themselves to
sleep
over your kind.
don’t add to that.
don’t do it.
unless it comes out of
your soul like a rocket,
unless being still would
drive you to madness or
suicide or murder,
don’t do it.
unless the sun inside you is
burning your gut,
don’t do it.

when it is truly time,
and if you have been chosen,
it will do it by
itself and it will keep on doing it
until you die or it dies in you.

there is no other way.

and there never was.

In our second foray into the Van Gogh Sessions, Karen and I attempted to put some structure around the radio show after last week’s meander. We decided to divide the show into three segments with a relevant song in between each segment. We kicked it off with the theme to “2001: Space Odyssey” to introduce the discussion on writing a personal mission statement and personal values. We then awkwardly segued into a rant about bad dates that began with the song “My Stupid Mouth.” For the final segment, which began with the song “Mysterious Ways,” we’d decided to alternate choosing the discussion topic. I started off the mystery topic section by asking Karen where she found inspiration for her writing.

I think it’s going to take a few weeks to smooth things out and figure out the show’s format. A couple listeners have said that the show sounds like eavesdropping on a conversation. I like that. I love talking to Karen and get so much out of our conversations and I love sharing her with everyone.

"You want tangible, social benefits to writing fiction?
